Several of the soil groups were represented in the samples tested by Yamamoto et al. (1973).The soil classification system which he used in his research is after Cline et al. (1955). Group A and C are hydrol humic latosols, which are wet throughout the year and have irreversible drying characteristics. Patern geologic material of the group A is basalt or basalt colluvium and of the group C it is ash. The humic latosols of group B and E have strongly developed A horizons. Soils of groups F and H from the Waianae Range are humic ferroginous latosols silty in texture and developed under alternate wetting and drying. Volcanic ash soils, whic are quite ectensive in the Waianae Range, are represented by groups C and D on the Koolau Range.
